REPORT CARD GRADES: How are they determined?
Elementary General Music grades in the Dayton Christian School System appear on Report Cards or online as "O" (outstanding), "S" (satisfactory), or "U" (unsatisfactory). Pluses and minuses may also appear beside the O, S, or U.
Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students automatically receive "S" as long as they are attempting to participate in all music room activities. There is no Course of Study and no testing.
Grades one through six, on the other hand, have a very robust Course of Study and multiple mastery tests to determine each student's level of competency each quarter. When a student passes one of the mastery tests, he or she receives one "credit" in Mr. Colaner's gradebook. Students accumulate credits up to a maximum of five per quarter.* The total number of credits for that quarter determines the final Report Card grade.
1 credit = U
2 credits = S-
3 credits = S
4 credits = S+
5 credits = O
Opportunities to earn credits:
One credit from Class Participaton. This simply means that students have not been formally disciplined for misbehavior during music class more than twice during the quarter. Formal discipline means that the student had to complete a rule-writing assignment or had to be sent to the Principal.
One credit from Performance Skills. During the 1st quarter, students clap and count a rhythm as though they are reading sheet music. During the 4th quarter, students demonstrate some basic skills used to read the up and down pitches in the sheet music. In the 3rd and 4th quarters students need only participate onstage in the performance of our Christmas cantata and spring cantata, respectively.
One credit from the Listening Test. Having repeatedly listened to selections of three or four historical compositions in class, and having studied the respective composers and performing groups, students identify each selection by title, composer, and performing group when it is played for them in a testing situation.
One credit from a Written Test. Even though there are very simple "pencil and paper" components to some Performance Skills and Listening Tests, the Written Tests in this category demand much higher levels of careful reading and memorization to identify music terms, usually from a Choice List.
One Credit from Bonus Points. The final credit is earned when a significant number of bonus point questions, embedded in some of the other tests, are answered correctly.
*This has proven to be a sound evaluation system because the various tests are set up to accommodate a variety of learning styles. For example, a student with a reading disability can still get credits from the Performance Test or the Listening Test. Conversely, a student with slow auditory processing can memorize the Study Guide for the Written Test and assure that he or she gets one or sometimes two credits that way. The system has only one disadvantage: since all testing must be done toward the end of the quarter - when all of that quarter's learning has finally taken place - it's sometimes hard for parents to know how children are doing until the last three weeks prior to Report Cards.

STUDY GUIDES (Not all tests and not all grade levels lend themselves to Study Guides. In music, not all the information can be reduced to something that can be written down. This is especially true of materials used in grades 1 & 2. Contact Mr. Colaner directly if you have questions or wish to have copies of non-digital materials.)
